"It's Not A Room, It's THE Room!"

Hey, Everyone!

Here's what Ramiro & my room looked like when I first moved in:Pretty bad, huh?

It took a long time for us to shift everything around and make things work, but, by January 10th, we had it looking like this:This layout served us pretty well for a long time, but the past few weeks, Ramiro's been saying "I want to rearrange our room! >:(" So today I said "Okay, then let's do it!"

It took hours, but this is what our room looks like as of today:Here's what was changed:
1.) We threw away a lot of trash and did a massive cleaning job.
2.) We got rid of one of the desks. Ramiro had found it "FREE!" on a sidewalk. That's where it is again. It was a pretty terrible desk. You can have it if you want it (and know where we live).
3.) We put Ramiro's art table where the terrible desk was. It's now his art table AND his computer table... Which is how he had it a long time ago, when he was quite productive.
4.) Ramiro's art chair is now his art/computer chair and the other chair is now by the TV for anyone to use (it has a heat/massage thing on it too and a pillow).
5.) Our nightstand is now by the TV. This upset me at first because I had been using it to do my writing on, but we went out and got me a lap desk with some of the money I've been earning and it's the BEST THING EVER. I'm very happy now. Though I do worry somewhat that I'll fall off our bed without the nightstand there to keep me from rolling... Though I guess I won't hit my head as often now. We'll see what happens!
6.) You can't see it, but we rearranged our bookshelf so things aren't stacked anymore. They're lined up like they should be. Also, we had a big bag/pile of VHS tapes lying around on the floor that's all tucked away now. We also put all the cat's toys in the cat bed (it was too small for them to actually sleep in) like a toy box. And they've actually been using it! Our "kids" are so smart! :3

We have a lot more floor space now (and we found out it's much easier to vacuum). It's going to take some getting used to, but Ramiro keeps saying "I love it! I love it!" and smiling happily and that makes me feel happy too. :)

Until next time...

Update On Robert's Mom

Hey, Everyone!

We just saw Robert's Mom for the first time since we released her after her surgery. She looks really good. :)

Also, I got my first job on Textbroker! (By the way, I think I said my payscale for Textbroker was 1.5 dollars... I meant 1.5 CENTS. My bad! I WISH it were 1.5 dollars!! Haha).

It's been super hot lately. Stay hydrated, Everyone!

Caught Robert's Mom!

Hey, Everyone!

After months of failed attempts, we finally caught Robert's Mom (the last of the feral cat colony in our neighbourhood that needed to be neutered). She was spade at 8:04am this morning. :)

In other news, my piece on Sun Valley (as seen in my last entry) was evaluated by Textbroker and they deemed me a "Class 4" writer. To clarify, there are 5 classifications of writers:
1 = lousy (not even allowed on the site)
2 = legible
3 = average
4 = excellent
5 = professional

As you can see, I'm in the "Excellent" category. They're also starting me off on a $1.50/per word pay scale (which is slightly higher than most "Excellent" writers start out on). That made me feel really good. I'm hoping that I'll start getting writing gigs on there soon and, someday, become a "Professional" writer.

My OFFICIAL WEBSITE now also has links to my writing. http://littlezotz.webs.com

Until next time...

PS: Dannon More of KEMPO HIKES asked me to fix up his MySpace page. I wish I'd taken a "Before" picture of it. It looked really awful. It was plain brown, his logo was squished off to one side (only half of it was showing), and there were a bunch of empty white boxes with no text. Anyway, here's what it looks like now that I've fixed it up: http://myspace.com/kempohikes I advised him that it would be good to "trim" that big block of About Me text, but, of course, in the end it was up to him. Special thanks to Ramiro for helping me figure out the technical stuff!

Sun Valley

Hey, Everyone!

I've joined TextBroker.com!

One of the requirements, in order for me to join, was to write them a 120-250 word "article" from a random topic of their choosing. I got "Write about sightseeing in your city." This is what I wrote:

The rumble of trains as they speed down the nearby train tracks, the roar of airplanes as they fly overhead, the meows of feral cats and the barks and howls of lost dogs, the off-key tinkling of so-called "music" from passing ice-cream trucks, and the constant crying of babies born to teen mothers... These are the sounds of my city. Sun Valley, a once fairly "nice," yet rural, town is now a flat wasteland of the surrounding cities "unwanted" members of society. Its story is reminiscent of what Bruce Springsteen sings about in his classic song, "My Hometown": Boarded up windows, vacant stores, and a lack of jobs. Pairs of shoes tied together by their laces litter the overhead power lines, signifying the meeting locales for the various drug deals common to this area. Pointed metal fences surround each house and motion-sensor lights turn on at the slightest provocation, spotlighting any passers-by out for an evening stroll. Vagrants wander aimlessly, and often stop to dig through the trashcans belonging to the residential homes. My advice to sightseers who have come to my city? Go elsewhere.

What do you think?

Last 2 Kittens

Hey, Everyone!

Great news! We were able to catch the last two kittens. They will be taken to the East Valley Animal Shelter as soon as they open in the morning. We've made sure that they have been fed and are well-hydrated.

Again, if you would like to adopt these kittens, please visit the shelter's adoption section here: http://www.laanimalservices.com/adoptapet_eval.htm

We still haven't had any luck catching Robert's Mom for FixNation, but we think we may have a significantly better chance now that her kittens are no longer distracting her.

Speaking of FixNation, after we caught the runt kitten last time, I mentioned that I got some hate mail. One of the complaints I received that I didn't mention was that everyone presumed we had caught the kitten in a FixNation trap (which are only meant to be used for FixNation purposes). This time, to avoid that particular argument from coming up again, I'm posting this picture:As you can clearly see, the kittens are not in a FixNation trap.

We felt bad lifting up their towel (covering a cat when it's enclosed in a trap or carrier helps to calm it significantly!) to take this picture, but we didn't want to get any more guff over something that isn't even an issue.

Again, if anyone out there is adopting these kittens, or any of the numerous other kittens at the shelter who need homes, please click here.

If anyone out there sends me hate mail over our taking these kittens to the shelter, their e-mails will not receive an answer.

Until next time...

Precious Ruby

Hey, Everyone

After my last post, I started receiving hate mail about the fact that we took the runt kitten (and will be taking the other two kittens) to a shelter. At first, we were upset by it, but we're not anymore because, look:

a.) We've been saying for over two months now that we were going to take the kittens to a shelter if nothing better came up,

b.) That kitten needed medical attention, which we could not afford to give (and the shelter was willing to provide),

c.) Those kittens wouldn't do well in the wild as we've been handling them pretty much since birth & they depend on us for food (which is what FixNation told us to do!),

d.) Even if the kittens DO get euthanized (as the writers are insisting), at least it'll be quick and humane--unlike starving to death and/or being eaten alive by parasites--though I highly doubt they will be (why would the shelter lie to us that they thought he had a great chance?) and,

e.) If those people liked the kittens so much, they could have stepped up and adopted them!!!! We've been advertising these kittens for a long time now!

I'm taking a stand right now. If you write me a hate mail message on this subject, you won't be getting a reply.

On the bright side, we got to go visit the kitten who DID get adopted today. She looks WONDERFUL! She's the most spoiled kitten in the universe and she's so clean and happy and tame and well-adjusted. He eyes are sort of brown now and she looks just lovely.

Her name is Ruby.

Shelter Kitty -- Please Adopt?

Hey, Everyone

We still haven't caught Robert's Mom. We tried the trick that was suggested (tying a drumstick to the back of the trap), but she still eluded us. And she managed to untie the drumstick! We didn't tie it on with some mamby-pamby homemaker bow either, we wrapped the twine around and around and tied it on with hardcore square knots! I'm starting to feel like Wile E. Coyote...

We did, however, catch the runt of the kitten litter--the littlest black one.

The past few days, the kittens haven't let me pick them up. They still come up to our feet, but they no longer want to be touched. And that's because they've become infested with fleas to the point that they're bleeding. They're in terrible pain. The runt was taking a nap yesterday and when he stood up, he'd left a small puddle of blood behind. We got a good look at them and their fur looks like it's moving. They're just swarming with fleas. They keep scratching and scratching. It's horrible. And in no way are we in a financial state to help them ourselves...

We took the kitten to the East Valley Animal Shelter. They were able to pick him up easily, which proved we had been taming him, so he stands a good chance of not being euthanized. They said that they would bathe him and give him his vaccines and treat him for fleas. They're on alert that we're going to be bringing in the other two kittens (male black & female tabby) as soon as we can catch them. Hopefully that will be soon.

If you're interested in adopting this kitten (or the other two once we bring them in), they post their pictures here: http://www.laanimalservices.com/adoptapet_eval.htm

Not Hired

Hey, Everyone!

I didn't get the job at Macy's. No one did. There were four applicants and none of us got the job. And it wasn't until the very end that they told us, "Oh, we aren't actually hiring anyone right now, we're just interviewing applicants in case we run short on help during the holiday season; which is around November to February." The whole time during the interview process we applicants were like ":D" face, happily answering questions, and then when she said that, we were instantly ":\" face. Why were they even interviewing people if they only "might" have an opening in NOVEMBER?! So frustrating!
Anyway, for those of you who complain that there aren't enough pictures of me on my blog about me, Ramiro took this picture of me right before I left for my interview:
Since I can't afford "real" haircuts these days, I've been cutting my own hair. Try not to be too harsh on me. Haha. The skirt I'm wearing is the one I bought when we took Agnes to the thrift store when she came to visit us. That's the Tingler I made Ramiro (based on the William Castle movie) on top of the TV. Ramiro's headcrab is hanging on the closet. My Persian rug from Mo is in our hallway. And that's the green chair Robert & Ziggy sleep on... Speaking of which:
Ha! More cat pics!! (You're welcome, Steff--I'm glad at least one of my readers likes the cat pics as much as I do). That's Ziggy giving Robert kisses before they tucked in and went to sleep.

I'm a bit disappointed about not getting hired at Macy's, but I guess God has a different plan for my life. I'm trying not to let it get me down. :)

I guess that's all for now. Until next time...

Quick Update

Hey, Everyone!

Just wanted to give you all a quick update on a few things:

1.) We were unable to catch Robert's Mom with the laundry basket trick. FixNation has now told us to try securely tying a chicken drumstick to the very back of the trap and see if that works. We'll be trying that Tuesday night.

2.) A while back I mentioned I was doing a "creepy" black and white 5-page comic? Well, I finished it, and I was invited to have it published in a zine called Hello World. Here's a panel from it:
That's all my own work. However, Ramiro has been going over the comic adding "additional inks" to make it look EXTRA nice. I'll be sure to post the whole thing once he's done sprucing it up.

3.) I have an interview at Macy's tomorrow! I'm not pinning all my hopes on it, but it's super nice to have someone call for an interview. It's hard not to get discouraged sometimes, sending out application after application and then not hearing anything back. Just the fact that I got another interview makes me really happy.

4.) I've been making steps toward starting up my own writing company, just like my (now very successful!) friend Danielle did. And a few hours ago, I just got my first job offer. I'll be writing an article. I'm far from being rich & famous (I'll be making enough to buy Ramiro & me a dinner at IHOP, pretty much); but it's a good first step and I'm extremely happy/excited! Working as an illustrator was nice, but I really do prefer writing. :)

5.) Yes, there are still 3 kittens available for adoption if you or anyone you know is interested. My e-mail address is littlezotz@gmail.com

Until next time!

Robert's Mom = Our Weekend Plans

Hello, Everyone!

I'm sure you all remember Robert's Mom (also the mother of the kittens we're trying to find homes for)...
She was supposed to have an appointment at FixNation today, but, again, we were unable to catch her. We set up the trap and, once again, she used her paws like a raccoon to scoop up the bait without triggering the trap. Though, one time, we DID catch her kittens! And, man, were they pissed!!

So, from 7pm to 12am last night, we sat outside with a long piece of twine attached to the door of the cage. Like a cartoon trap... You know. With a box, some bait, a stick, and a piece of rope. Like the way you catch the rat in Monkey Island 2.

Anyway, she went in the trap when we did that too, but she managed to slip out as the trap was closing. She's FAST!!

We wrote to FixNation and got this in reply:

Will this cat go anywhere near your feet? If the cat will get close enough to your feet, you plop a laundry basket trap over the cat, then "spider" the cat onto a piece of secure plywood, which becomes the "floor", then duct tape the whole thing together. Bring along an extra empty trap for the cat to recover in. Make sense?

You're officially on the roving reservation list. Let me know when you've been able to trap her, okay?

Yes--keep the trap and keep trying!!!

don't give up--you'll get her.

liz

So, I guess you all know what we'll be doing Sunday night. Wish us luck!!

Brush Your Teeth!!

“How many times a week do you floss?”

We all know the question. Every dentist asks it, nearly every comedian has a bit about it, but the question less asked—the question that should be asked—is: “How often do you brush your teeth?”

When I was younger, before I moved out and had to start buying my own tubes of toothpaste, I used to brush my teeth five times a day. I would brush my teeth as soon as I woke up, after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, and once more before finally slipping into bed. I admit that this was a tad excessive, but consider this: I am nearly 26 years old and I have never ever had a cavity. But, if my behaviour was excessive, please consider the opposite: people who don’t brush their teeth at all. As someone who had an, albeit brief, background in dental assisting, this mentality simply baffles me. How does this happen? I can understand it if you’re homeless or otherwise incapable of owning a toothbrush and toothpaste, but how does the average middle, upper, or even middle-lower, class person not know that brushing your teeth isn’t an “optional” task in your daily routine; it’s a must!

The American Dental Association, the grand poobahs of all things “teeth,” advise that everyone brush their teeth a minimum of twice a day. Sure, flossing is great, and so is mouthwash, but did you know that brushing alone gets rid of most of the plaque, and other gross bacteria, that can cause tooth decay, gum disease, and (eww) bad breath. That is, if you do it right.

Always brush with a soft-bristled brush. The softer the better! But, why then, you ask, do they make “firm” bristled brushes? Because some people like the “feel” of them and, ultimately, toothbrush companies are out to make money. They’re a business. But, what they aren’t telling you is that bristles that are too firm, or if your actual brushing motions are too rough or vigorous, your gums can recess. With firm bristles or rough brushing where too much pressure is applied, you eventually end up wearing away your gums. This has the look of your gums being pushed higher and higher and more and more of your tooth being exposed. The only way to “fix” this problem is with periodontal surgery. This type of surgery is extremely expensive, extremely painful, and can easily be avoided; just brush softly with a very soft-bristled tooth brush!

When brushing your teeth, start with a slightly moist toothbrush “prepped” with a modest amount of toothpaste, and brush your teeth gently with small circular motions starting with your back teeth and progressing forward to your front. Don’t forget to do the “back side” of your teeth as well. And to really stick it to those bad breath goblins hiding out in your mouth, brush the insides of your cheeks and your tongue. A good trick to see if you’ve banished any offensive odors is to lick the back of your hand and then smell it. What you smell is what other people are going to smell when they talk to you. If it’s undesirable, you may need to brush your teeth again.

So go out. Live your life with confidence. Brush your teeth a minimum of twice a day. And don’t forget to smile!

Kittens Finally Sexed

Hey, Everyone!

As you all probably know by now, the tabby kitten is a female. However, up until now, we were unsure about the sexes of the black kittens. We now know for sure: They're both males.

Funny how that worked out, huh? Both tabbies being females and both blacks being males...

Again, if you or anyone you know would like to adopt one of the kittens I've been posting about here, please contact me at littlezotz@gmail.com

Thank you!
