Beef Ole

Okay, so, I made dinner tonight for Ramiro and my family-in-law [Ramiro Sr. (father-in-law), Martha (mother-in-law), and Sarahe (sister-in-law)] and it turned out really well! I know! I'm shocked too. haha. But, anyway, I thought I'd post up the recipe in case there's anyone else out there that needs a very easy recipe that makes a good amount of food in a short amount of time. :)

This is a recipe that my dad (Robert Tharp) came up with when he first started living on his own. It's cheap and easy. It's called "Beef Ole" (or, as he calls it, "Beast Ole"...he's weird like that):

Ingredients

1.5 pounds hamburger
1 onion (chopped)
15 oz. tomato sauce
15 oz. kidney beans
1 can sliced black olives (optional!)
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic salt
1.5 cups cottage cheese
1 egg
0.5 pounds jack cheese (shredded)
About 10 corn tortillas (cut in strips)

Instructions
  1. Cook burger & onions; then drain
  2. Stir in tomato sauce, beans, olives (optional), and seasonings.
  3. Simmer for 10-15 minutes
  4. Blend cottage cheese & egg in a bowl
  5. In a dish/pan (like for lasagna), layer: tortillas, then the meat sauce, then the cottage cheese mixture on top.
  6. Top the whole thing in jack cheese
  7. Bake for 25 minutes at 375 degrees
And that's it!

Hope that was helpful to someone out there.

Also, many thanks to all the cards, letters, e-mails, phone calls, texts, and money(!) you guys have been sending me to help ease Ramiro & me into our new life. It's all been VERY appreciated. You're the best! <3

The 6th Day

Wednesday (1), Thursday (2), Friday (3), Saturday (4), Sunday (5), Monday (6)... Okay, so, today's my 6th day in my new living space. And so far things are going great!

Ramiro and I share a room that's smaller than my old bedroom at my parents' house. Which has made things very tough/interesting. We've really had to make the most of the small space and we've both had to get rid of a lot of things.

Also, there's no "my stuff" and "your stuff" anymore. It's "our stuff." We've combined our DVDs, our VHS tapes, our CDs, our games, our books, our art supplies, and (omg!) our comic books. We share a very small closet. It's been a tough adjustment!

On the other hand, we're very grateful for each other's company (not to put words in his mouth or anything, but I happen to know he enjoys having me around). And I love having him around to talk to all the time. Now when I read/hear/see something, I don't have to think "Gee, I wish Ramiro was here to read/hear/see this too!" because he is here. So that's really nice. And, as I'm writing right now, I still have just enough privacy and space to think. Which is something I was concerned about (what with it being such a small space!). So that's quite a relief too!

The first meal we cooked together was a bit of a mixed bag. haha. The hamburger patties came out fantastic and the yams were great too (except that they finished about half-an-hour later than we anticipated). But we failed to follow the directions on this weird multi-grain pasta (boil water, then add the pasta) and it turned into a weird paste. And we didn't have any cream, butter or real cheese... So we made an Alfredo sauce out of milk, sour cream, and Parmesan powdered cheese. It actually tasted just about right (amazingly!), but was a bit grainy. Live and learn, right?

However, I've noticed that I have a lot less back pain here. And Ramiro noticed that I don't have my weird stomach distress hiccups anymore (my "meeps" for those of you who know me well). And I feel a lot more relaxed. Now that I have so much responsibility, there's really no time to be "emo" about things. It's a whole new beginning! :)

Anyway, Ramiro and I also share this computer now, so I should probably get off and let him have a turn!

Until next time...

Change of Address...

...Change of Life.

So.

I've moved out from my parents house. I'm now living with Ramiro.

I don't really want to discuss it right now, so please don't ask me too many questions. I know it's unexpected (for me too!!), but it's for the best.

I'll try to send my change of address to everyone I know, but if somehow you don't get the information, please feel free to e-mail me. And, provided you're someone I actually know and not some Internet crazy, I'll send it to you.

It's taking a lot of adjustment, but thus far I'm actually really happy. For one thing, since we now share a room, it's caused Ramiro and me both to be a lot less cluttered. We're totally Zen now. (haha, not quite, but the room we share is very tidy!)

I love my parents and I talk to them every day. And I visit them often. I miss my cat though. As of now, I can't talk about my cat (Dorian) out loud without crying. I couldn't afford to take him with me. But if anyone can take great care of my baby, it's Mom. She's a wonder with pets/animals.

Okay, well, expect an e-mail soon with my new address.

Until next time...

Not Feeling Well

First of all, many thanks to those of you who have written and/or called me to wish me well. It's true: I haven't been feeling well lately. I've been in and out of the hospital with a string of "illnesses."

Early last month, I had a bit of a cold, but continued to go to work anyway. I was getting more hours and needed the money and I forced myself to keep going even though I kept getting progressively worse. The day before Thanksgiving, Ramiro ended up taking me to the hospital. My cold had turned into Pneumonia. I was forced to take some time off from work. (I haven't been back to work since November 23rd).

And, just as I was starting to feel all the way better (except for a lingering cough--which I've been told could stick around for another two weeks!), poor Ramiro ended up having to take me to the hospital again. With my zero immunity from the Pneumonia, I ended up catching a very bad flu virus that mainly affected the "violently throwing up" and "non-stop diarrhea" parts of my anatomy. NOT PLEASANT AT ALL! Ugh.

I'm out of the hospital now and on the road to recovery from all my various troubles. Except my wallet is a bit worse for wear. I've ended up having to spend much MUCH more than I made when I forced myself to go to work with a cold. And my dream of having a Saving's Account? Well... Maybe next year. I was only a few dollars away, but now I'm pretty much down to the "lucky" two-dollar bill I started out with. I'm trying very, very hard not to be extremely bummed about this and remain optimistic that 2010 will be better money-wise. *smiles*

On the bright side, my Thanksgiving went pretty well... I had Pneumonia and couldn't taste anything (and my diet restrictions meant I couldn't eat a lot of the "good stuff"--it was basically just an ordinary meal for me), but Ramiro came over and my mom's brother and his ex-wife. So that was nice.

And I'm very thankful for all the wonderful people in my life. Especially Ramiro. And my parents. And Ramiro's parents & sister. There are many many AWESOME people in my life, but those are the ones that I'm the most grateful for at this moment. You know that people really REALLY love you when they'll still sit with you when you're horrifically throwing up. Thanks, guys. I love you all so much. <3

Anyway, that's pretty much what I've been up to lately. Just...being sick. You haven't missed much! haha.

Hopefully my next entry will be something more fun!

Later.

For Dummies

Okay, so I'm a bit sick right now. Haven't been feeling my Smurfy best for the past couple days. Not sick enough to stay home from work mind you (threw up, but no fever = usually not contagious to others), but sick enough where I feel pretty darn crummy by the time I get home from work.

On the other hand, not feeling well always has the advantage of slowing me down enough to catch up on my reading. Here's a list of what I have read or am currently reading as of late:
Okay, I'm going to stop for a minute. That last book is by far the best in that list. I was very skeptical about the "For Dummies" series of books, but they are honestly fantastic (or at least the ones I've read so far have been!). They have good information and are written in a way that can usually make me laugh, or at least stay in a relatively good mood. This is important since most of the books I've gotten from them are about very "serious"/hard-to-deal-with subject matters (which some books make relatively depressing). In fact, the "For Dummies" book on Hypoglycemia is so good that's it's actually referenced in a couple of the other books on that reading list of mine!

I also have/read:

Those last two came in the mail just earlier today. I read a few pages into each of them and so far they're both pretty good. I have high hopes.

Speaking of back pain, I treated myself to an early Christmas (maybe birthday?...since my family isn't exchanging Christmas gifts again this year) gift: A back massager for my chair. With heat!

As I write to you, I currently have a ThermaCare heat wrap on my back. Which is fantastic. But, I got to thinking: with all the money I spend on disposable heat packs, I may as well invest in something a tad more permanent. And, hey, bonus!--Maaaaaaaaassssssssssaaaaaaaaaage. I can't wait.

Ever since my back sprain last summer, my back hasn't quite been the same. I try to be vigilant about the exercises the Physical Therapists gave me, but it's hard. They're so time-consuming! But I try to at least do the twisty one for sure and maybe one or two of the other ones before I head off to work each day. But, lately, I've been having a lot of back pain in spite of things. So much so that it wakes me up at night. Hurts.

In other news, I'm working on a short black & white comic. It's going to be only about 4 or 5 pages long. It's "creepy." It may be for something or it may not. I don't know yet. But I'm having a lot of fun doing it and I'm sure that you'll get to see it either way. (Though don't expect it any time soon since they've increased my work hours and I don't have a lot of free time anymore...and what free time I do have, I'd rather spend with Ramiro).

Until next time...

No Hablo Mucho Espanol

Hmmmm... So, not a whole lot has been going on lately. I've been getting a lot more hours at work (Del Taco). That's good, I suppose. I'll be happy on Pay Day.

I've been trying to learn Spanish. I was told straight-up that if I didn't speak Spanish that there was no chance of my being promoted or getting a raise.

Would I have this problem if I didn't live/work in Los Angeles?

Probably not.

But, I do. So I guess I've gotta deal with it.

This isn't just an issue with Del Taco. In the past, a few places have refused to hire me because I didn't speak Spanish.

It's very difficult. In the past, people have told me that it's "such an easy language," but I'm having a lot of trouble with it. Necesito ayuda! I've been trying to learn on my own with books and audio CDs and such. And, on a side note, did you know that the Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English Dictionary doesn't have the Spanish translation for the word "onion" (among other things)? That's something that I need to know to communicate with the cooks and Spanish-speaking customers at Del Taco. There's a great lack of food words in my books! Very frustrating.

The sad thing is, I actually kinda like learning new languages and writing. I loved learning IPA and Masonic code and such... But Spanish feels like it's being forced on me and that makes me a bit resentful. I actually do want to learn it, mainly to better understand my future in-laws (who're Mexican), but I'd like to learn it in a fun way and at my own pace. Not because, if I don't learn it, I won't be able to advance my "career."

Oh well.

If anyone has any tips on how to make it a bit easier for me to learn, please let me know.

In other news, Ramiro and I went to the Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum in Hollywood the other day and it was fantastic. The most fun that I've had at a museum in years!

That's all for now.

Halloween & Such

This is sort of a companion piece to Ramiro's wonderful LiveJournal entry about Halloween weekend. (Mostly I just wanted to show off my EC comics too...). For more details about how I spent the weekend, you can just read his entry (it has lots of pics too!).

Halloween weekend was a blast. My "little brother," Vincent, was having a show with his band Corpse Candy on the 30th and I finally got to see them perform! It was very exciting (and LOUD) and I was very proud. :3
I went to the Corpse Candy show with Ramiro (who did their amazing album cover). We got to go to IHOP after the show. Scrumptious!

(I got my hair cut a few weeks ago by Jaz at VOUS Hair...)

One of the very best things about Halloween and Halloween weekend was going to House of Secrets and Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee. I love those places. Especially HoS (EBSM can honestly be a bit overwhelming). If you're in the area, you simply must stop by!

At House of Secrets, Ramiro was able to add to his collection of EC comics. I was very excited by this because I'm a huge fan too. Actually, my stack of comics used to be even larger than his but I ended up giving the bulk of my collection to Vincent (of Corpse Candy) when he was a small child (obviously warping him--in the best way!--for life).

Here's what I have left of my EC horror comics:(Those Tales From The Crypt TV show DVDs were fun to watch over the weekend, too!)

I also have a few EC oddities that aren't in the horror genre:(That's right, EC Piracy comics weren't just made up by Alan Moore. They're real!).

Halloween itself was very chillaxed. Lots of trick-or-treaters at my parents' house (over 50!) and Ramiro & I came over and helped carve pumpkins...

(You can click on that to make it bigger)

And that's pretty much it. Good times.

Oh, and for those of you who are interested, I got a note from Children's Hospital today saying that they received the money I donated. :)That's all for now.

Until next time...

Got My Copy of Scary Man

Hmmmmmmmmm... So, from my last entry, you all know that I was hired to illustrate a book called Scary Man last year. Well, I received my copy in the mail (from Amazon) earlier today.

I must say, it's a bit of a disappointment.

The front/back cover look GREAT! They're all shiny and nice. Looks fantastic. But then, when you open it up and look through the inside, there are several things wrong with it.
  1. My credit as illustrator has been completely removed from the inside. I get the impression that I probably would have been removed from the cover as well if it wouldn't have ruined the illustration (good thing I did the lettering on that myself).
  2. Several of the illustrations are severely warped. I mean, I'm not the best "artist" in the world, but I'm not that bad. haha. Several of the characters look squashed and very peculiar. It makes me cringe! (And it almost makes me glad that my name isn't attached to it on the inside...)
  3. The text is all over the place! On one page in particular (page 17), the text is printed directly onto the illustration (making it hard to read/see either!). Were they just not paying attention??

Those are my three main complaints about the book. The two things that I liked:
  1. The front/back cover looks fantastic! For serious. It's just how I pictured it to look.
  2. It was printed on 30% recycled paper and printed on presses that run purely on solar and wind power.
So, that's my review of the quality of the actual printed book. It's still a fun piece to have (and I'm still kinda thrilled that my name's on the cover at least), but do NOT waste $20 on it. In my opinion, it's worth maybe about $10. Though since it came out so shoddy (text all over the place!!), maybe $8.

Sort of an embarrassment.

Though my mom says that's just because I have a personal involvement with it. She says it's "not that bad."

Scary Man

Okay, so, about a year ago, I was hired to illustrate a book for children. I haven't been allowed to talk about it thus far (I was under contract), but now that it's officially been published, I'm free to show the world!

It's about how to avoid pedophiles.

It was a very challenging project. There were certain scenes that had the potential to be extremely skeevy and had to be handled...delicately. I think I did a pretty good job, honestly.

The book itself can be a bit dull at times (I didn't write it). It's VERY repetitive. But I suppose that's because it wants to make sure that its points (mainly "don't talk to strangers") very very clear. Kinda hammers it in. Which, in some cases, I think is a good thing.

If you're a parent unsure of how to talk to your children about Stranger Danger, this could be a handy tool.

Or, if you're just a collector of VERY ODD literature. This could be something to add to your shelf to make your friends go "Whaaaaaaaaa...?"

I don't get any royalties from sales, but, if you're interested in buying a copy, it's available on Amazon: here.

So...that's pretty neat. :) Not only am I a published writer (poetry, newspaper articles, magazine articles, short stories) and published model (R&M bridal catalog 2003), but I'm officially a published illustrator as well now!

Woo!

Fan of 90s Video Games?

Then I may have just the fan art pieces for you! And, guess what!--they're FOR SALE!!
In 1991, Wolf Team released a game for Sega Genesis called Arcus Odyssey. This original 11X14 inch acrylic painting by Lauren R. Tharp captures (hopefully!) the spirit of that wonderful game.

Included on the painting:
Erin (playable character--pictured as she looked in both the End Credits and the player select menu)
Diana (playable character
--pictured as she looked in both the End Credits and the player select menu)
Castomira (evil sorceress!--as she looked in the opening)
Leaty (princess of light--as she looked in the opening)

The "Map" that shows up between "Acts"

Also, the sides are painted in a dark orange and have the words "Ambition," "Peace," "Fighter" and "Hero" written in black cursive. On the back of the painting the word "Darkness" is written in the same black cursive. Those of you who have played the game may remember those words as the names of the Swords you must collect during "The Bad Dream" Act. :)

Available FOR SALE

Also...
In 1993, Konami released a game, produced by LucasArts, called Zombies Ate My Neighbors. And those of you who have played it, whether on the Sega Genesis or on the SNES, know just how amazingly fun it was.

Relive the fun and the memories of Zombies Ate My Neighbors with this original piece of fan art painted by Lauren R. Tharp. It captures not only the hypnotic spiral of the start-up screen, but the classic poses taken on by the main characters during the "character select" menu.

The painting itself is 8x10 inches and was painted entirely with acrylic paints on a cotton canvas.

Available FOR SALE!!

If you're a fan of either (or both!) of these games, please consider buying these wonderful ONE OF A KIND ORIGINAL pieces of Fan Art!

I could really use the money...

Thanks and HAPPY BIDDING!!

Donation Time!

Omigosh, you guys! I'm super excited about this!

Before I went to bed, I couldn't resist checking my bank account one last time and--YES!!--the PayPal transfer went through!! :D

I immediately filled out all the forms and whatnot to donate to Childrens Hospital. (I'm donating to the Los Angeles branch since that's the one that took care of me as a wee one). I'm so excited! People have made donations to various causes in my name before and I've donated spare change here and there, but this is the first "big" donation I've ever made. And it's something that means a lot to me.

Anyway, as promised, here are the pics of the check and everything:
Yay!

I'm so grateful to have the ability to walk.

Much thanks to all of you for supporting me & my endeavor!

I pass by a mailbox on my way to work. I'll drop this in first thing in the morning. I'm so excited! I want to do this again next year!! (Maybe I'll be able to afford to donate more by then!)

The Box Sold!

The box I decorated with Fan Art (see entry directly below this one) sold!

My original intent was to keep $50 for myself in order to open a Savings Account (or at least to get by on... I was shorted 2 days pay on my last paycheck and I hate borrowing from my parents) and give the rest to Children's Hospital. But since the box sold for $55, I thought it would be pretty lame to only give $5 to the hospital... So I'm giving the whole thing to the hospital and keeping none for myself.

As soon as the money from PayPal gets transferred to my bank account (should be another 4 days), I'll make out the check and send it to Children's Hospital. I'll be sure to take a pic so you guys can see too. :)

I was originally hoping to go down to the hospital in person and drop off the check (and get a receipt...), but it's a bit far away and I'd probably end up wasting as much on gas as I'm donating. haha. Sadness.

Anyway! On to THANK YOUS!

Special thanks to:
  • Zach of SMBC for his news post about my box (which is actually what ended up leading the buyer to my auction!)
  • Tom of Gunnerkrigg Court for writing me a very lovely letter about my box (he saw it a bit late and couldn't help promote it, but he took time out of his busy schedule to write to me how much he liked it)

and, of course,

  • David from Austria for liking my box enough to actually BUY it! Thank you!!>

More updates soon!

FAN ART BOX FOR SALE (MONEY WILL GO TO GOOD CAUSE!)

Okay, so here's the deal... My goal for this year was to open a Savings Account for myself. And I was hoping to do it before the end of October because my bank is having a deal where they'll toss in an extra $25 (good deal!), buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut...I've done the math and I'm probably going to be about $50 short to meet the deadline. So...I'd like $50.

I've also been doing a lot of thinking about my health lately. And, although I've got some troubles (as you may have read about in my other entries), at least I can walk.

Now, this wasn't always the case. Here's me circa 1986:
I was born with a birth defect. Ya know how you're supposed to have a ball & socket on your leg/hip? I didn't have that. So, I ended up needing to have extremely extensive hip surgery that included all sorts of bone grafting and whatnot. This, of course, was very expensive. And my parents had both been laid off from their jobs at the time...

Children's Hospital and Crippled Children's Services came to the rescue. They paid for my surgery in full. That's the only reason that I'm able to walk now.

I'd really like to repay them.

That's where the title of this entry comes in. I've made a piece of fan art and I'm selling it on eBay. I want to keep $50 for myself (to fulfill my dream of finally having a Savings Account!) and then I want to give the rest to Children's Hospital!! So... If I get $150 for my art, I'll keep $50 and give $100 to the Hospital. If I get $1,000,000 for it, I'll keep $50 and give $999,950 to the Hospital! Get it? :)

I will post pictures of the check (and probably me going to the hospital and giving it to them) after the item sells.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd...without further ado, here's what I'm selling:
It's a wooden box. It's eight (8) inches long, four & a half (4.5) inches wide, and one & a half (1.5) inches deep. I used acrylic paints and black ink pens to decorate it. The bottom (not shown) is black with little pieces of felt glued on so that it won't scuff up anyone's furniture. There are fourteen (14) different comic strip/book/characters represented on the box's top. These are all artists/comics/characters that have changed my life in some way or simply make me smile. I hope that some (or all!) have done the same for you at some point!

They are:
1.) Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal by Zach Weiner
2.) Gunnerkrigg Court by Tom Siddell
3.) Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck by Don Rosa (Carl Barks is the original guy, of course, but I adore Rosa's work)
4.) Archie Comics (my fave is Jughead!) by Samm Shwartz (there are a lot of artists that've done Archie comics, but he's my personal favourite)
5.) The Farside by Gary Larson
6.) Questionable Content by Jeph Jaques
7.) Batman (I chose to draw him in the style of the animated series--which was also the comic series I enjoyed most)
8.) Rachel The Great by Rachel Nabors
9.) Cowbirds In Love by Sanjay Kulkarni
10.) Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai
11.) Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson
12.) Serenity by RealBuzz Studios
13.) SKINCUBE by Ramiro Roman, Jr.
14.) EC Comics (the "Old Witch" from the Haunt of Fear series is featured here)

Here's the listing on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170386715476

HAPPY BIDDING!!! and THANK YOU!!!!!

--Lauren*
PS: This is my first eBay listing, but I used to list things in high school under my parents' eBay name (zotzcoin). So please don't be nervous about my non-existant Feedback rating on my own account at the moment. :) I also sell things on Amazon under the "littlezotz" seller name as well and I have 100% positive feedback on there!

Another Hypoglycemia Post

Okay, so the doctor got the full panel of results back today.

Everything from yesterday still stands. And I got the note to give to Del Taco that says to "please excuse Lauren to take a five minute break every two hours to eat something due to her medical condition." So that should help...

I was also told today that I'm at EXTREME HIGH RISK for diabetes. Apparently my pancreas is being "grossly overworked" (and, yes, my pancreas ACHING is the cause of the mysterious painful stitch I get in my side sometimes--omg). I was told that I will get diabetes, but depending on how well I take care of myself, it could be in a year, in 10 years, or in 50 years. I just have to keep up with my food diary (I write down everything I eat and how I feel after it) and monitor any changes and go in for check-ups and so forth.

I need to eat SMALL, frequent meals. I had the frequency right. And the type of meals right, but I was eating too much. Which is why I would sometimes feel really sluggish and have to lie down after eating. My body simply cannot process large meals. It's even been strongly recommended to me that if I ever go out to eat, to have the cook put half of my meal into a doggie bag before I even get started. I must "never" overeat.

Also, apparently, if I don't watch my weight, it could be the straw that breaks the camel's back so to speak. As soon as I get "fat," that'll most likely be what triggers the diabetes to officially start up. O_O Jeez! (Looks like I trimmed down just in time!!)

So... There ya go then. I have to eat ultra small meals every 2 hours, I need to exercise & stay trim, and all that stuff.

Thank you again for all the support.

--Lauren*
PS: If I was ever mean to you because I was going through a blood sugar crash, I am very VERY sorry.

Hypoglycemia

Okay, so a few of you know that I've been having some troubles with my health lately...
  • Exhaustion/fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Irritability/temper flare-ups
  • Insomnia at night
  • Confusion/trouble focusing/indecisiveness
  • Severe PMS
  • Depression
  • Nervousness
  • Vision problems (blurring, spots, aching eyes)
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness at random (which comes with excessive yawning & sighing)
  • Joint/muscle pain, even with little to no activity to "cause" it
  • Numbness
  • Constantly cold hands & feet
  • Ringing in ears
  • Indigestion & internal tremblings
  • Light & noise sensitivity
  • Cold sweats
This is partly why I've been even more anti-social than usual lately. I haven't felt good in a long time now.

There are a few of you who know that I'm hypoglycemic. Well, a few months ago, I ended up having a really bad "attack" in Ramiro's car--I went into an angry fit, a crying jag, an anxiety attack, and nearly passed out. It was at that point that Ramiro (poor guy!) went "You have GOT to get yourself under control."

It was at that point that I finally started taking my hypoglycemia seriously. I was first diagnosed with it when I was 15, but for years I was in denial. Then, when I started dating Ramiro, I began to take things more seriously, but I didn't really know how to handle it other than eating frequently (which I had tried for a stint in high school but eventually gave up on). Sooooooooooooooo... I bought a bunch of books, went online, talked to people, etc. and really researched it. And my diet was all wrong! I ended up changing my diet to what was essentially a "Diabetic Diet"--so NO SUGAR and NO WHITE FLOUR--and ended up feeling better than I had in YEARS! (Not to mention I lost 15 pounds and 10 inches!)

But then, I started working at Del Taco (and we get no breaks!--it's absurd!), and then I sprained my back, and then I had my period...and then everything went to crap.

It was a pretty fast decline after that.

Ramiro finally convinced me to seek professional help. I put aside my beefs with doctors and went to get some tests done. Those of you who follow me on Twitter know that my glucose tolerance test is today.

Basically, I bombed my test.

The lowest anyone's blood sugar should ever go is 75. Mine was at 34.

So... I don't just have hypoglycemia. I have SEVERE hypoglycemia. The doctor called me up to give me my results and was just...marveling... He didn't even want to think about how low my blood sugar might go (or may have gone!) if I weren't on my awesome hypoglycemia diet. And frankly I don't want to think about it either.

And, on a side note, Glucose Tolerance tests are really Hellish. This was the 3rd time I've had to take one. They're awful. I hope that none of you have to take one ever. You know the part in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince where Dumbledore has to drink that stuff to get the locket?? It's like that. Only I had to get a bunch of blood drawn on top of drinking something painfully bad (it felt like it was burning the back of my throat). Ramiro could barely watch. I was so glad to have him with me though. Especially after it was over (the test takes 3 hours). I was very queasy and dizzy and had a bunch of spots in my vison. Terrible. And then I came home and ate 2 sandwiches, a peach, and a bunch of sunchips all in one sitting. haha. I hadn't been that starved since my first black belt test!

So, basically, it's "imperative" that I eat "small frequent meals." I'm going to be getting a note to give to my boss that FORCES Del Taco to give me breaks to eat some snacks. And if they won't comply, I'm going to have to quit (yes, it's that important).

It's also been recommended that I see a "lady doc" for my "lady parts" to get my periods/PMS under control (probably with pills) at least for a little while until I can get my blood sugar levels back to something resembling normal.

So that's the good news, I guess. While I'll always have hypoglycemia and it'll always have to be taken care of (much like my allergies to soy & fish!), it CAN be controlled.

So...there you go then. That's what's been going on with me lately.

And, if anyone out there reading this has Hypoglycemia or knows someone who has it, please take it seriously.

Thank you to all of you who have been so supportive. And special thanks to Ramiro. I love you.

A Part of You

I posted a new painting on my Deviant Art account last night. My first new painting since May...

A Part of You by ~littlezotz on deviantART

It's fan art of Ramiro Roman, Jr's stuff.

I know it's normally kind of lame to do "fan art" of your significant other's work... But his stuff is just so dang cool!!
